Removing litter and illegally dumped items is an ongoing action for the Otara Waterways and Lake Trust.

Litter is blown from the street into waterways but there is also the problem of deliberate dumping of items such as whiteware, shopping trolleys, and bags of rubbish.

Not only is this visually unappealing and dangerous, but it can also attract vermin and more litter, contributing further to the disconnection between people and the waterways.

Streams with rubbish are often perceived by the public as also having poor water quality which therefore discourages interaction and meaningful exchanges with waterways.

Details of creek clean up days can be found on the Ōtara Waterways and Lake Trust's Facebook page.
